Rooted in the Land

Grace’s days begin with the soft rustle of willow leaves in the morning breeze, bees humming in the garden, and the joyful chatter of her young son. She lives in Eugene, Oregon, where she and her husband cultivate over ten varieties of willow for basketry using regenerative practices. With a diverse background in native habitat restoration, outdoor education, and a master’s in Crop Science focused on seeds, Grace’s life is deeply intertwined with plants and their stories.

In 2018, Grace took her first basket weaving class with Karen Sherwood. She left that class carrying a reed foraging basket with a simple strap—a basket she would later fill with nettles, mushrooms, berries, and herbs she harvested from the wild and her garden. This first basket was more than an object; it was a revelation of what her hands were capable of creating and a doorway into a craft that felt deeply ancestral and grounding.

The Spark

Weaving as Connection

Grace is fascinated by the ancient art of basketry and how baskets have shaped human history, embodying both practicality and aesthetic expression. Each basket she weaves represents not only a functional object and a basic survival tool but also a work of art—a testament to human creativity and our connection with the earth. Through weaving, Grace explores themes of sustainability, connection, and the profound relationship between humans and the natural world.

Grace’s approach to teaching is rooted in patience and the understanding that each student brings unique strengths to the table. She offers a balance of written and hands-on instruction, ensuring that each learner, regardless of their style, feels supported in their weaving journey. Inspired by her own mentors—Karen Sherwood, Margaret Mathewson, Jo Campbell Ansler, Carol Horvath—Grace finds deep joy in helping students discover what they are capable of, reminding them of the power of their own hands to create, and igniting new creative passions through the ancient craft of basketry.
